In my late teens I joined a youth club called "Focus" with a few mates for a bit of fun. It wasn't too long before we joined the boxing club to keep fit for our local weekend football club. In time and one by one, each of my mates that I'd joined with were dropping out had gone back to former "vices" i.e. Football, Snooker & Pool Halls, Pubs, Gambling & "Hustling".
Since joining the Boxing club I had made many new friends, some of which have become lifelong! What I found so liberating was that it was open to all i.e. nobody cared about the fighters race, creed or colour e.g. English, Irish, Italians, West Indians, Travelers, Indian, Pakistan to name a few. One of the volunteer trainers at the club called Cliff Evans who saw something in me, encouraged me to keep coming to the gym & bought me my 1st pair of bag mitts.
When I joined the boxing club I was a life long Asthma sufferer and advised by my GP that training would help improve my lungs but I would never be able to compete.
Well didn't I prove her wrong! During my Amateur career I won the 3 x Mid Anglia, 2 x Eastern Counties Titles and on a few occasions joined the Eastern Counties squad competing across the UK and abroad.
During the latter part of my amateur career I (amongst others) had received payments to appear on shows. With this in mind & with a new born I decided to turn Pro alongside my daytime job to earn a little bit extra. I obviously wanted to do well but the main priority was to earn that bit extra in a sport that I really enjoyed. In time I shall share my Professional experiences with you.
